Launching a peer-to-peer recognition program starts with clarity. Most programs that fail do not fail at launch — they fail because nobody agreed on what recognition was for.

Define the moments that matter

Define what kinds of moments employees should recognize, how recognition connects to company values, and which channels will be used. Keep the first version simple so teams can learn it quickly and begin participating without confusion.

  1. Pick three to five company values worth recognizing.
  2. Choose one primary channel where recognition will live.
  3. Write two or three example shout-outs so people know what good looks like.

Reinforce after the launch

From there, focus on reinforcement. Share examples, celebrate adoption, and help managers model the behavior week after week.

A strong launch creates awareness, but ongoing reinforcement is what makes the program stick.

Give the program a full quarter before judging it. Habits take time — and recognition is, above all, a habit.
